This view is taken from the upper balcony of Court 1, looking down at the bench and Bar area. As you can see, this courtroom provides for a bench of all seven Justices; it is used for all constitutional matters, other matters where all seven Justices sit, and on ceremonial occasions. The wall behind the bench is panelled in red tulip oak, and is more than 17 metres high. The top of the bench, and the long, curved Bar table, are made from jarrah timber. The front of the bench is finished in Aurisina marble. In the middle of the Bar table is the lectern, from which each of the parties address the bench in turn. At the bench, the Chief Justice sits in the middle, and the other Justices alternate to his right and left in order of their seniority. Behind the Justices sit the Tipstaves, whose job it is to assemble the appropriate documentation and legal authorities for each case and place them in front of their Justice as required during the course of the hearing. Moving the screen to the right, you can see two paintings hanging on the wall. Click on each of these in turn for a closer look. Turning right through 180 degrees one can see virtually all of the upper balcony until arriving at a further painting and a tapestry on the lower level. Click on each of these for a closer look. |
