Joined Victorian Bar 1904 (KC 1922). Lt Commander, Naval Intelligence, World War I. MHR 1922-34, including Attorney-General 1925-29 and 1931-34. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for External Affairs 1931-34. Leader of the Opposition 1929-31. First Australian Minister to Japan 1940. PC (1933).
